Earth Day 2025: Caring for the Islands We Call Home
April 22, 2025
Earth Day reminds us of our profound connection to the planet we call home. It's a day to reflect on the delicate balance of our ecosystems, particularly our oceans—the lifeblood of our planet. These vast blue expanses cover nearly 70% of the globe, provide more than half the oxygen we breathe, and absorb over 30% of carbon dioxide emissions. They regulate our climate, recycle essential minerals, and protect countless other ecosystems that depend on their health. As a member of the PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP, where sustainability is an essential pillar, Paul Gauguin Cruises embraces the responsibility of protecting the natural environments and local communities we are privileged to explore. Having sailed the waters of French Polynesia and the South Pacific for over 26 years, these islands aren't just a destination for us—they're our home. At Paul Gauguin Cruises, our environmental philosophy transforms ideals into action. Through thoughtful innovation and community engagement, we're charting a course toward a more sustainable tomorrow. Let's explore the tangible ways we're making a difference.
Supporting Scientific Research
Recently, the ship welcomed a team of seagrass experts from Australia who came to study the potential of French Polynesia’s seagrass habitats to capture CO₂ and help mitigate climate change. During their expedition, they discovered seagrass in several previously undocumented locations across islands and atolls, collecting valuable new data on biomass and coverage—data that has never been recorded before in this region. These findings will contribute to scientific publications and highlight the global significance of seagrass ecosystems in this vast and relatively unexplored area of the Pacific. Access to these remote sites was made possible by the ship’s unique capabilities, reinforcing the importance of continued exploration, conservation, and research into these vital "blue carbon" ecosystems. The scientists also benefited from the ship’s resources—particularly diving support—and engaged with guests through lectures and onboard discussions, covering topics like marine heatwaves, pollution, and the broader impacts of climate change.
Technology Upgrades
In 2021, the PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP joined the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative launched by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This commitment aims to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastic and transition to reuse and recycling models. Aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, plastic straws, laundry bags, cups, and single food portions are banned. Instead, guests receive reusable water bottles that serve the dual purpose of reducing waste and raising awareness about environmental conservation. Recent technological updates have enhanced our sustainability profile. The Gauguin now features advanced heat recovery systems, efficient chillers, and optimized electric motors—all significantly reducing energy consumption. Additional waste management enhancements include a glass crusher and a cardboard compactor for efficient recycling.
Healing Communities: The Taote Gauguin Initiative
Our commitment extends beyond environmental concerns to the communities we visit. We're proud that our "Taote Gauguin" medical partnership—taote meaning "doctor" in Tahitian—was recently honored as the 2024 Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the Seatrade Cruise Awards. Launched in October 2023, this essential healthcare assistance program serves some of the most remote islands in French Polynesia. The ship's medical staff supports local healthcare efforts by assisting doctors with emergency or acute cases. The initiative also provides access to the ship's medical equipment when needed, significantly reducing the need for medical evacuations from these isolated areas. Since the start of the program, more than 110 patients have benefited from this initiative. These wonderful communities have warmly welcomed our guests into their lives for many years, sharing their rich cultures, traditions, and natural wonders. It is our privilege to give back and continue supporting those who live here.
We Care: Our Ongoing Commitment
Our We Care initiatives reflect the deep relationships we share with local communities and a profound reverence for these islands. This commitment is woven into every aspect of our operations. Our guests become active participants in our mission, often without realizing it. Whether ascending a densely forested peak for panoramic views, diving beneath the surface to witness the precious biodiversity along the reefs, or participating in our Moana Explorer Program for children—offered in partnership with Te mana o te moana, a leading South Pacific marine conservation foundation—every experience becomes part of the vital educational process that keeps French Polynesia's environment at the forefront of our collective consciousness.
Cultural connections are equally vital. Our troupe of cultural ambassadors, Les Gauguines and Les Gauguins, live aboard ship as hosts and entertainers, providing guests with their first touchpoint to Tahiti's vibrant culture. Through these interactions—learning to strum a ukulele, weave a hei (flower crown), or perform a traditional dance—our guests absorb and advance Tahitian culture. By bringing travelers to this unique destination, we contribute more than $26 million annually to the development and economy of these islands. Every market visit, pearl farm tour, or rainforest excursion helps sustain these places and the people who call them home. Earth Day may come once a year, but at Paul Gauguin Cruises, our commitment to sustainable practices and community support continues every day. We invite you to join us and experience the magic of French Polynesia aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, where luxury and sustainability sail hand in hand toward a better tomorrow.
